Dog Talk December 2002 (previous articles)

Walking in the Dark
  • Leash your dog and keep it close to your side at all times.
  • Using ID tags, tattoos, or microchips, make sure your dog can be easily identified for prompt return if, by chance, the two of you are separated.
  • Make sure you and your dog are highly visible.
  •  Use passive-illumination devices such as reflective collars and vests for your dog and reflective footwear and clothing for yourself.
  • For even more protection, consider battery-powered active illumination. Devices range from hand-held or strapped-on lanterns to retractable leashes with flashlights built into the handle and flashing safety collars. (The latter are available at pet stores and through specialty catalogs.) Not only will these devices alert passing motorists, they will also announce your presence to other animals and possibly prevent unwanted encounters with wandering wildlife.
