Dog Talk November 2001

Turkey Day Tips

Here are some tips to eliminate potential holiday hazards for your dog:

  • Comings and goings mean open doors, and your dog may slip out unnoticed. Make sure your dog has proper identification so your neighbors can promptly return your dog if it winds up at their Thanksgiving table.
  • Holiday snacks that are fine for people may not be so fine for dogs. Keep human munchies such as peanuts and chocolate out of their reach.
  • Poultry or other meat bones are NOT appropriate holiday treats for your dog. They can splinter and wreak havoc with a dog's digestive tract.
  • Provide your dog with a quiet sanctuary (an open crate with a warm blanket or a dog bed nestled in a secluded part of the house). Even though dogs are gregarious, they sometimes need a snooze away from Thanksgiving craziness.
  • Politely ask guests to respect your dog as a family member. Remind younger visitors that ear tugging and tail yanking are NOT appropriate.
